Sylivie Courvoisier
Piano
Sylvie Courvoisier’s solo work spans a range of sonic expression as vast as it is personal. This was evident in the performance she gave in Bremen, Germany, before receiving the 2022 German Jazz Award in the International Piano category.
Sylvie's musical language is rooted equally in her deep engagement with the 20th-century modernism of composers like Messiaen and Ligeti, and with creative improvisers such as Cecil Taylor and Thelonious Monk. Her unmatched fluency in working inside the piano with non-invasive techniques and preparations forms a poignant counterpoint to her masterful touch on the keyboard. These qualities are, of course, apparent in her work with her acclaimed trio and her recent duo collaboration on The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky and her Spectre d'un songe with Cory Smythe. However, they are most evident in her solo performances.
She moves fluidly through her growing repertoire of compositions, presenting them either in full or as fragments, and incorporates sections of open improvisation where anything can happen. Raw and peaceful beauty and startling violence can arise in close proximity. At the same time, she always seems to weave recurring elements into these explorations, binding diverse sections together so they feel like "a single piece."
