Steven Bernstein: SEXMOB
Available dates from July 1 until 27, 2025

STEVEN BERNSTEIN, trumpet.

BRIGGAN KRAUSS, saxo alto.

TONY SCHERR, bass.

KENNY WOLLESEN, drums and vibraphone.

The extraordinary quartet Sex Mob, led by trumpeter, composer, and arranger Steven Bernstein (Millennial Territory Orchestra, Butler-Bernstein & The Hot 9, Mostly Other People Do the Killing), has been active for over two decades. Since its formation in 1996 during a residency at New York's legendary Knitting Factory, the ensemble—featuring its leader on slide trumpet, Briggan Krauss (Quidnuncs, H-Alpha) on alto sax, Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell Trio, Jon Cowherd Mercy Project) on bass, and Kenny Wollesen (Bill Frisell Trio, Eivind Opsvik's Overseas) on drums—has imbued its aesthetic approach with an innovative, fresh, and irreverent character.

In Sex Mob’s unique musical vision, the expressive and uncommon sound of Steven Bernstein’s slide trumpet stands out, along with the group’s remarkable versatility in combining original compositions with a repertoire of adaptations. These include Sign O’ the Times by Prince, Ripple by Grateful Dead, About a Girl by Nirvana, Ruby Tuesday by The Rolling Stones, Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney, Black and Tan Fantasy by Duke Ellington, and John Barry's themes for the James Bond saga, such as You Only Live Twice, 007, and Over and Out, as well as Nino Rota’s compositions for Federico Fellini’s films, including Amarcord, La Strada, I Vitelloni, and La Dolce Vita, among others.

The quartet’s formidable discography includes their debut in 1998 with Din of Inequity (featuring contributions from keyboardist John Medeski and guitarists Adam Levy and London McDaniels), followed by Solid Sender in 2000 (with DJ Logic), Sex Mob Does Bond in 2001 (again with John Medeski), Dime Grind Palace in 2003 (with contributions from Roswell Rudd, John Kruth, Peter Apfelbaum, Mark Stewart, Marcus Rojas, and Scott Robinson), Sexotica in 2006, the live album Sex Mob Meets Medeski – Live in Willisau in 2009, and their latest work, Cinema, Circus & Spaghetti (Sex Mob Plays Fellini: The Music of Nino Rota) in 2013.

"Sexmob makes every day a Bar Mitzvah!" –WJF organizer/presenter Adam Schatz (from 2016 Billboard article)

"It doesn't get earthier than Sexmob...What matters is the fact that it catches the spirit, that infectious yet elusive Sexmob vibe." –Jazz Times

"This new project makes for a copacetic counterpart to the group's latest album, "Sex Mob Plays Fellini..." –Wall Street Journal

"Sexmob has been straddling the lines between genres for 17 years by incorporating popular tunes into instrumental jazz, and putting the emphasis on beats that move feet. Drummer Kenny Wollesen's funk rhythms, particularly of the New Orleans variety, create a party atmosphere, and Bernstein's visually striking slide trumpet doesn't hurt the hedonistic vibe that Sexmob conveys." –OregonLive.com

"[That spirit] – one of wailing, riotous abandon mixed with eccentric song choices, high musicianship and healthy doses of funky downtown grit – is on ample display on the group's first live recording, Meets Medeski..." –All About Jazz

"The band Sexmob specializes in a distinct strain of deconstructionist improvised music: jazz that aims at fun by bouncing off the walls." –NPR Music

"...Steven Bernstein's Sexmob have given themselves one task: to make modern jazz fun." –Popmatters

"...Sexmob, the pugnacious four-piece effectively led by the trumpeter Steven Bernstein..." –The New York Times

JOE LALLY, bass

BRENDAN CANTY, drums

Joe Lally was onstage, playing at full throttle, when he realized that his band had found a true kindred spirit. It was the fall of 2021 and the Messthetics — the instrumental trio of Lally on bass, his former Fugazi bandmate Brendan Canty on drums and guitarist Anthony Pirog — were at Brooklyn venue the Bell House, digging into their uptempo riff workout “Serpent Tongue.” Joining them for the piece was a special guest, acclaimed jazz saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, making only his second cameo with the group after a drop-in at another New York show back in 2019. That first meeting had been a success, but this time, Lewis’ presence sparked something new.

Steve Coleman and Five Elements, with their just released live performance at the renowned Village Vanguard in New York City, "Mdw Ntr," finds MacArthur Fellow Steve Coleman exploring new terrain in his use of non-linear performance practices in his music. Featuring his long-running flagship ensemble Five Elements, he utilizes spontaneous and pre-composed modules, or motivic cells that can be played in any order, allowing each musician to spontaneously jump forward or backward to different sections – even between compositions – highlighting different strata of the music and reinventing the form in a completely interactive way with each performance.
